One dead as Afghan Muslims protest against the burning of Koran

At least one person has been killed and many injured in Afghanistan in the second day of protests over the burning of copies of the Koran. There were demonstrations in Kabul and the eastern city of Jalalabad. U.S Generals have apologised and insisted no offence was intended but that has failed to pacify the crowds. The Americans have claimed copies of the Koran were being used to smuggle messages. The US commander of Nato troops in Afghanistan has apologised over reports that foreign troops had "improperly disposed" of copies of the Koran. In a statement, Gen John R Allen ordered a full investigation . Rumours that a Koran had been burnt led to a large protest outside the US air base at Bagram about 60km north of Kabul.

Yemen marks the day of presidential elections as end to 33-year reign of President Saleh; Vice-President Hadi the sole canditate in the elections

Violence in southern Yemen has marred an election to replace veteran leader Ali Abdullah Saleh from hios 33-year reign. At least eight soldiers have been killed at southern polling stations despite a large army presence, after separatists called for a voter boycott. Voters are expected to rubber-stamp Vice-President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi - the only candidate in Tuesday's poll. The separatist Southern Movement called for a day of "civil disobedience" to mark the vote. The poll comes after a year violent anti-government protests erupted in the Arabian Peninsula's poorest country. The election follows a deal brokered by Yemen's Gulf Arab neighbours.
