Three Week Long Strike Finally Called Off

Clashes between Police and members of the Tharu Joint struggle committee continued at Bashabashahi of Nawalparashi today. The situation got tensed after the irate Tharu protesters torched a Police beat at Bashabashahi and vandalized an ambulance carrying a patient en route to Kathmandy from Bhairahawa. Police, after the incident has fired 8 rounds of tear gas shells to bring the situation under control.

 
Meanwhile, Undivided Far West campaigners today called off the shutdown strike which was being enforced in the far west region since three week a day after they reached an understanding with the governmnet.However just when it seemed that life was getting back to normal in the region, the indefinite strike called from today by the joint struggle committee comprising Brahmin and Chhetris has threatened to revert the situation back to the same. Session of the Legislature-Parliament Postponed

The 11th session of the Legislature-Parliament has been postponed following the obstruction from the Madhes-based lawmakers at International Conference Centre in New Baneshwor today . It was scheduled to table a bill to amend interim constitution to pave the way for shortening the endorsement of the final draft of the new constitution in the meeting. Earlier at the start of the meeting, Speaker Subash Chandra Nembang read out letters received from the president´s office. President Dr Ram Baran Yadav had called the House session upon the recommendation of Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai on Tuesday.The next House meeting has been called for 3 PM on Friday.Meanwhile, the Constituent Assembly meeting scheduled for today has also been postponed till Friday at 5 pm.

Effect of Strike on Life

Normal life in the capital Kathmandu and across the country was adversely affected on the first day of the indefinite strike called by the Joint Struggle Committee of various caste-groups. The committee, comprised of representatives from different communities like Brahman, Chhetri, Thakuri, Dashnami, Dalit, Khas Chhetri, and other marginalized communities has called the strike in protest of an ethnic-based federalism. Transportation in the capital was thrown out of gear as the day progressed thanks to obstructions created at the major thoroughfares by the strike enforcers. The agitators took protest rallies from different parts of Kathmandu valley, including Koteshwor, Gongabu, Balaju, Kalanki, Baneshwor and Maharajgunj shouting slogans against ethnic states throughout the day.

Madhesi Front Threatens to Quit Government

Only two days after the political parties made a breakthrough on disputed constitutional issues, the alliance of five Madhesh based parties- The United Democratic Madhesi Front has strongly opposed the agreement to carve out 11 federal states while restructuring state. During its meeting with the ruling UCPN (Maoist) at the prime minister’s official residence in Baluwatar this morning, the Madhesi leaders threatened to quit the government and take to the streets if the 11-province model is not reviewed. In return, Maoist chairman Prachanda had urged the Madhesi leaders not to think of pulling out of the government at present while assuring them of resolving the issue through a mutual discussion, Chairman of Sadbhavana party Rajendra Mahato quoted the former as saying.
